I come to textiles with a background in education, a lifetime of experience in various fiber arts, and a strong interest in fabric and clothing design. Painted clothing is for me an exciting and inspiring medium in which to express color and design. Within this medium I am able to merge my own sense of color with my lifetime of experience in sewing and the various fiber arts. I am influenced by artists such as Henri Matisse, Sonia Delaunay, Walter Anderson, and Hans Hofmann for their senses of color and design.
I’m also influenced by the world around me, in ways I can hardly begin to enumerate. From the wonderful subtlety of color and pattern in the natural world to the architecture of buildings on the street, my immediate environment and the visual impressions that are left with me impact on my work. My personal taste in clothing is for clothing that is unusual, well-crafted, and timeless, but has an element of understatement. I attempt to achieve that in my work.

I begin with white silk, which I then proceed to color. Immersion dyeing, various techniques of resist dyeing, discharging, and marbling are the primary techniques I use to apply layers of color to silk, although I occasionally apply direct printing methods as well. I consider myself a colorist who uses my own dyed, painted, and printed silks to create functional, timeless garments.
